Often referred to as Virginia tobacco or “bright tobacco”, flue-cured tobacco is a light-colored leaf that produces a mild and somewhat crisp taste. Historically, it was dried in dark barns hung from the rafters (initially in Virginia, USA) and required hot conditions to dry fully. Characteristics of flue cured tobacco include a lower nicotine content with a high concentration of sugar, so it’s a great option for those who want to mix their own strains and are seeking a smoother tasting blend.
How It’s Cured
After harvesting the leaves they are kept alive throughout the yellowing period. This is essential in order for them to result in the correct color. The temperature starts at ambient and is raised up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in increments of 2 degrees per hour. Once the yellowing process has been achieved, the leaves are thoroughly wilted and the temperature is raised to 130 degrees to prevent any further coloring or chemical changes – if it isn’t done correctly, the leaves won’t turn to their desired lemon-orange color.
Unique Characteristics of Flue Cured Tobacco
Many characteristics of flue cured tobacco are different from other common strains. The unique drying process gives the leaves a different appearance and texture, and the flavor is unlike many of the typical strains you’ll come across. Compared with other types of tobacco, flue-cured tobacco isn’t as susceptible to molding, either.
