Air curing is a method of curing tobacco that is relatively simple by definition – air is used to cure the leaves instead of heat as in the case of fire-cured, flue-cured, or other methods. Tobacco leaves are hung in ventilated barns and are subjected to the natural atmospheric conditions, and after 3-12 weeks (depending on which type of tobacco and the way it was harvested) the leaves will turn either tan, red/brown, or dark brown color. In most cases, tobacco that will be air cured is commonly harvested by cutting down the stalk as opposed to trimming off mature leaves.
Types of Air Curing
Light Air Cured Tobacco (LAC)
The characteristics of air cured tobacco classified as LAC pertain to color and flavor, which are both lighter than DAC. LAC tobacco isn’t fermented and cures using natural heat in the air. Our Organic Burley is one of the most common LAC tobacco products – in fact, it’s the second most popular worldwide.
Dark Air Cured Tobacco (DAC)
The characteristics of air cured tobacco classified as DAC include a more bold flavor that is desirable when making cigars. DAC tobacco is fermented, unlike LAC tobacco, which gives it a very distinct aroma. Aside from cigars, it’s commonly used in chewing tobacco, snuff, dark cigarettes, and pipe tobacco.
